Chickens At Leo & Aliyah

At Leo and Aliyah, our foremost mission lies in the natural processes of restoration, conservation, and regeneration.  We strive to enhance soil biodiversity, foster a variety of plant life, and support wildlife, all while improving the water cycle and the numerous ecosystem services that underpin our environment.  To support these initiatives, we strictly prohibit the use of herbicides, pesticides, and chemical fertilizers.

Our chickens therefore grow in harmony with nature, foraging and thriving within a sustainable ecosystem, free from hormones, antibiotics, and manufactured feeds.  These inquisitive and active creatures flourish when given the freedom to explore their surroundings.

In our regenerative system, chickens roam freely, scratching and pecking the earth for insects, seeds, and plants.

A special work troop of roosters are placed into a mobile field paddock, where they engage in intensive foraging during the cool morning hours. As the sun climbs higher in the sky, this hardworking troop is released to explore at their leisure.

Our meat birds, as well as all of our young, along with their mother hens, rotate weekly among four distinct paddocks adjacent to their coops. This rotation not only allows the paddocks to recover and thrive but also promotes the growth of fresh grasses, plants, and an influx of insects for the chickens to feast upon.

In addition, each coop area and respective paddocks feature their own compost piles, providing the chickens a rich source of nutrition.

As our chickens forage, they aerate the soil, manage insect and weed populations, distribute nutrients, and encourage the growth of various plant species. This mutually beneficial relationship between livestock and land is central to our mission of cultivating a vibrant ecosystem that nourishes both the earth and the creatures, and therefore produces high-quality, ethically raised meats that are a pleasure to serve at your kitchen table.

Nutrition

Meat Of Robust Nutritional Value And Enhanced Texture

Regenerative agriculture significantly improves the health and welfare of livestock, particularly chickens.  By promoting biodiversity and soil health, this approach allows chickens to forage on a diverse diet of insects, plants, and seeds, leading to a nutrient-rich meat.  Research shows that chickens raised in regenerative systems have higher levels of essential nutrients, such as omega-3 fatty acids, vitamins A, E, and B, which are vital for health.  Additionally, the meat has a denser, firmer texture, enhancing the culinary experience compared to the mushy texture of commercially produced chicken, which often results from intensive farming practices.  Moreover, regenerative agriculture prioritizes animal welfare and environmental sustainability, producing meat free from harmful hormones and antibiotics.  This results in a cleaner, safer product for consumers, making meat from regenerative practices a healthier choice.

Eggs With Richer Nutritional Profile And Vibrant Yolk Color

The diverse diet available to chickens plays a crucial role in producing eggs that are not only visually appealing but also nutritionally superior.  These eggs boast elevated levels of essential nutrients such as vitamin D, vitamin E, and beta-carotene, enhancing their overall quality and offering consumers a more healthful option.  The nutritional composition of an egg is shaped by several factors, including its protein content, amino acid profile, and the array of vitamins and minerals present.  Healthier hens yield eggs with increased carotenoid concentrations, resulting in a strikingly vibrant yolk, ranging in color from golden to orange.  To achieve this sought-after color, it is imperative that hens receive high-quality feed, appropriate care, and, above all, maintain optimal health.  The egg serves as a vital dietary reference for a chick, supplying all necessary components for its survival and development.

In contrast, chickens confined to cages without outdoor access often rely on color additives to enhance yolk appearance.  While certain additives, such as algae, marigold petals, and orange peels, may offer some nutritional benefits, they fall short of the advantages provided by a pasture-raised diet.  This natural grazing allows chickens to consume insects, worms, and seeds, significantly enriching their diet with heart-healthy omega-3 fatty acids.

Meat And Eggs Of Superior Flavor

In addition to the health benefits, the flavor profile of both the meat and eggs from chickens raised in regenerative systems is often described as superior.  The natural foraging behavior of the chickens, combined with their varied diet, results in a richer, more complex taste that is often preferred by chefs and home cooks alike.  This emphasis on flavor and nutrition aligns with the growing consumer demand for high-quality, sustainably produced food.
