What is a Ñaqui?
Every time our grandmother, Leo, baked her delectable shortbread cookies, she always reserved them for our after-dinner indulgence. Despite her rule, the irresistible taste of her shortbread tempted both children and adults alike to ask for just one piece before dinner. To keep us content without spoiling our appetite, she began shaping them into distinctive smaller cookies, each of which we affectionately called a “ñaqui”, a Spanish colloquialism meaning, bite-size. Leo’s distinct approach to crafting these ñaquis elevated her shortbread to a whole new level of exquisiteness. Hence, The Ñaqui Shortbread that we are pleased to share with you. Enjoy!
How is the word, Ñaqui, pronounced?
The lower case, ñ, and upper-case, Ñ, is a Spanish palatal letter which means it is pronounced by placing middle of the tongue (rather than the tip of it) flat against the roof of the mouth. This causes the air to come out of the nose instead of the mouth. The word is pronounced, ñakee.
